What to Expect at a Hearing Test

TYPES OF HEARING TESTS

Depending on the patient’s needs and concerns, several types of hearing tests can be performed. Here are some of the most common:

Pure-Tone Audiometry

This test measures the quietest sounds a person can hear at different frequencies. During the test, the patient wears headphones and listens to beeps at different volumes and pitches. They will be asked to indicate when they can hear the sound

Speech Audiometry

This test evaluates how well a person can hear and understand speech. The patient listens to a series of words or sentences at different volumes and is asked to repeat them. This test can determine the type and severity of a hearing loss

Tympanometry

This test measures the eardrum’s movement in response to changes in air pressure. It can detect issues with the middle ear, such as fluid buildup or a perforated eardrum.

PREPARING FOR A HEARING TEST

Before we begin your hearing test, we’ll ask you some questions about your medical history and any concerns you have about your hearing. We may also ask about any medications you’re taking, as some drugs can affect the test results. It’s important to be honest and thorough when answering these questions to ensure we provide an accurate diagnosis.

Please wear comfortable clothing and remove any hats or accessories that may interfere with the headphones. If you wear hearing aids, please bring them to your appointment.

THE HEARING TEST PROCESS

During the hearing test, our audiologist will guide you through each test and explain what to expect. You’ll listen to a series of words or sentences at different volumes for speech audiometry and repeat them back. You’ll also wear headphones and listen to a series of beeps at different volumes and pitches for pure-tone audiometry.

For tympanometry, we’ll insert a small probe into your ear canal, which changes the air pressure and measures the eardrum’s movement. Otoacoustic emissions are measured by placing a small probe in the ear canal and playing a series of tones.

After the hearing test, our audiologist will interpret and explain the results to you. Speech audiometry results are measured in decibels and can indicate the type and severity of a hearing loss. The results of pure-tone audiometry are plotted on an audiogram, which shows the softest sounds you can hear at different frequencies.

Tympanometry results are measured in millimetres of pressure and can indicate issues with the middle ear, such as fluid buildup or a perforated eardrum. Otoacoustic emissions results can indicate issues with the inner ear, such as damage to the hair cells in the cochlea.
